Dream it.
HIT Living Foundation’s founder, Heather Crowe, journeyed to Caribbean waters in January of 2022, and from it HIT Living International came to life, the international branch to the HIT Living Foundation. Heather understands the importance of respecting Island life and culture around animals. It is our mission to work with local communities to bring awareness and education around the importance of spay and neuter to control the pet population, maximize resources, and provide healthy lives for their potcake communities (potcakes are how mixed breed dogs are referred to in the Caribbean).
-
Build it.
Spay and neuter clinics in countries like the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba are more important than ever and imperative to potcake survival. Often, locals and potcake communities are competing for basic resources like food, water and shelter. With minimal access to vaccines, common diseases often found in the U.S. like parvo, distemper, and leptospirosis can run rampant. Left untreated, potcakes run the risk of slow and painful deaths. Spay and neuter is the answer to population control and life-saving efforts.
-
Grow it.
The damage of Hurricane Dorian went far beyond the immediate impact. Its effect is still felt amongst those who had to leave their unaltered potcakes behind when they evacuated. Then the world was hit with Covid19 bringing international travel to a halt. 2 years later, the feral potcake communities in Abaco have grown to numbers they haven’t seen in decades. Working with local veterinarians and shelters, HIT Living International’s work in Abaco will lay the groundwork for other U.S.-based rescues to successfully operate their own International spay and neuter clinics. Our goal is to lend a paw with a guidebook to help communities in need.
